Medical Properties Of Medical Marijuana

The chemical components of Medical Marijuana, referred to as cannabinoids, play a major role in the realm of medicine known as CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine). Medical Marijuana, also know as Medical Cannabis, has been employed for a wide array of medicinal uses for many centuries for its pharmacological effects on the CNS (Central Nervous System) and the immune system. Its anticancer properties and its ability to help the body cope with the side-effects of cancer as well as the treatment process through the activation of specific receptors throughout the body were discovered quite recently.
The non-psychtropic and modifying cannabinoid that has a number of different medical properties called Cannabidiol comprises 75% of the total cannabinoids content in a few rare strains of cannabis. This modifying cannabinoid called Cannabinol has low psychoactive properties. It is known to reduce the psychoactive effects of THC by degenerating it. Its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antispasmodic, and antioxidant properties are well-known.
The cannabinoid, Cannabigerol that is found in Cannabis, particularly its medical marijuana and hemp varieties is the precursor form of other cannabinoids like THC and CBD. It is a bone stimulant with antibacterial and anti-proliferative properties.
Tetrahydrocannabivarin is found in cannabis along with THC. This psychoactive cannabinoid has numerous medical benefits in THC, which include decreased appetite and as the dosage gets larger, it is known to oppose the medicinal properties of THC. There are a number of THCV-based pharmaceuticals that are currently undergoing human trials to address the problems of obesity and Type II diabetes.
Akin to Tetrahydrocannabivarin is the non-psychoactive cannabinoid, Cannabichromene that is usually found in cannabis and it also known to have a few medical properties. It is renowned for its anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, antimicrobial, analgesic properties, also stimulates the growth of bones and constricts blood vessels.
One of the principal psychoactive cannabinoid compounds found in marijuana is Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC that occurs naturally as THC-A, its acidic form and is not absorbed readily by the body in its naturally occurring state. When heated, THC-A undergoes decarboxylation to a readily absorbable from that has a number of different medical benefits.
Both Tetrahydrocannabinol and Cannabidiol have anxiolytic, antispasmodic, anti-proliferative anticancer, anti-inflammatory, neuro-protective, antiemetic, and neuropathic analgesic properties. In addition, Cannabidiol is also a bone-stimulant and immunosuppressant with antibacterial, antipsychotic, antiepileptic, anti-ischemic, anti diabetic, anti psoriatic, and vasorelaxation properties while the antioxidant Tetrahydrocannabinol stimulates appetite, reduces the intraocular eye pressure, promotes the growth of new nerve tissue, also protects nerves from damage.

The Safety of FDA Approved Drugs Vs Alternative Medicine

Research conducted on the safety of medical cannabis vs. the safety of 17 drugs that were approved by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) based on the number of deaths caused showed that medical cannabis was the secondary suspect in 279 deaths as against 1,679 deaths where FDA-approved drugs were the secondary suspect.

While medical marijuana or MMJ was never reported as the primary suspect, the total number of cases in which the 17 FDA-approved drugs seemed to be the culprit was as high as 10,008. All the statistics and data were collected over a period of 8 years from January 1, 1997 to June 30th, 2005. The total number of death recorded in this period that were caused due to medical marijuana was astonishingly low (279) when compared with those caused by the FDA-approved drugs (11,687).

Of the 17 FDA-approved drugs that were chosen for this study, twelve of them were selected as they are commonly prescribed instead of medical marijuana. The other five FDA-approved drugs were randomly chosen as these are widely recognized and used by the general public. These 17 drugs included a mix of anti-emetics (drugs that are used to treat vomiting), antispasmodics (drugs that are used to treat muscle spasms), antipsychotics (drugs that are used to tract psychosis), and other popular drugs that are commonly used for treating Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), depression, narcolepsy, erectile dysfunction, and pain.

The number of deaths recorded due to the use of each drug was manually counted as the information supplied by the FDA included all the adverse events of which only a portion included deaths. A copy of the adverse events, these being defined as incidents where the use of drugs of any dosage including medical devices such as in vitro diagnostics or medical food, infant formula, dietary supplements, and other special nutritional products are suspected to have triggered an adverse outcome in a patient was also submitted.

The information was collected from five printed reports and 12 CDs with copies of the AERS (Adverse Event Reporting System) report for each and every drug that was a part of this study. A review of these AERS reports supplied by the FDA revealed that there were some deaths where medical marijuana was also a used at the time of death. This lead to more investigation regarding the use of medical cannabis, and cannabinoids as concomitant drugs in reported deaths.

Clinical Proof Supports Users Claims That THC Kills Cancer

In 1974, researchers at the Medical College of Virginia were given funding by the National Institute of Health (NIH) to study the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on the immune system. Working on the assumption that they would find evidence to support the NIH's contention that THC damaged the immune system, the researchers discovered instead that the compound was shrinking tumors in the mice they were using for their tests. This was the first known study that showed that THC was possibly the cancer breakthrough the world was looking for.
The Virginia study was abruptly cut short by the FDA and the results of were suppressed. It wasn't until 1998 that a research group led by Dr. Manuel Guzman at Complutense University, Spain discovered the same thing. This time, they were able to complete their study and publish their results. The study concluded that THC shrank tumors through an anti-angiogenesis action. Angiogenesis is the process of forming new blood vessels. Cancer cells require a blood supply in order to grow and spread. THC prevented the growth of blood vessels and thus destroyed the tumors.
In addition, they discovered that THC worked directly on the cancer by modulating key signal pathways and inducing cell death. For reasons that are still obscure, cancer cells grow into tumors because they are "programmed" for immortality. Unlike normal, healthy cells, they do not receive signals to die after they have divided and replicated. THC somehow repaired that deficit and induced cell death. As a result, the tumors shrank.
A later study, headed by Maria Salazar, also of Complutense University, came to the same conclusions. This study emphasized the ability of THC to induce autophagy. The literal translation of autophagy is "self eat." In the biological sciences, it refers to a phenomenon whereby cells digest themselves and die. Cancer researchers have been studying autophagy for decades, because this is how normal cells die, but cancer cells are not programmed to go through this process. Instead, they continue to divide and live. This is why cancer ultimately spreads so quickly: the tumor grows exponentially as cells divide.
There have been other clinical studies as well. In every case, THC is proven to be an effective treatment for cancer. If it weren't for the taboo against the psychoactive effects of cannabis, it is likely that it would already be in widespread use as a cure for cancer. Even though decades of research have debunked the theory that cannabis, when used medicinally, leads to addiction, criminal behavior or mental illness, the authorities continue to dig in their heels and it remains a Schedule 1 restricted substance.
There are signs of change, though. Increasing numbers of clinical studies are being undertaken and medical marijuana is being legally used in many U.S. states as a palliative. The more that people use it therapeutically, the more they discover about its remarkable value as a medicine. Perhaps the scales are about to tip and cancer sufferers will have access to the one proven cure for cancer without having to resort to breaking the law. There is a natural treatment for cancer. Come see for yourself.

The Debate Over Medical Marijuana is Still Smoking

The debate over the pros and cons of medical marijuana has lingered about as a long as the cannabis plant has been in existence. It is estimated that the plant has been used for treatment purposes for close to 5,000 years in various countries and cultures worldwide. In the United States, trying to keep track of marijuana laws and regulations is much like watching a professional table tennis match: the ball never stops moving around the table.
Proponents of the legal use of cannabis for medicinal purposes claim that it can provide relief for those suffering from serious chronic conditions like glaucoma and the nausea that often accompanies chemotherapy treatments. States that have legalized medicinal marijuana use have up to 15 conditions that are considered appropriate for its use. Medical problems where cannabis is thought helpful for symptom relief include AIDS, migraines and Multiple Sclerosis.
Those who oppose the use of marijuana for therapeutic or medicinal reasons list several reasons. First and foremost, it is still classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance under federal laws. Drugs classified as Schedule 1 include heroin and LSD and as such, are deemed to have no medical value. Opponents also believe that for every ailment that medical cannabis may aid, there are legal FDA approved products available that do the same.
Countless medical and scientific studies have been conducted on medical marijuana. Here again physicians and scientists are divided regarding whether or not this drug has true medical value. Many believe that cannabis should be available as an alternative to those suffering from serious medical issues who do not respond well to pharmaceutical options. On the con side, marijuana does contain a number of chemicals beyond THC and everyone is familiar with the dangers of smoking when it comes to cardiopulmonary issues.
More Americans seem to be amenable to legalizing medicinal marijuana. A random phone poll of 1,000 adults conducted in April 2010 by the Associated Press/CNBC showed 60% favoring legal possession when medically approved. Twelve percent were neutral and 28% opposed any type of legal pot possession. The Washington Post/ ABC News did a similar poll with the same number of respondents. The question was if doctors should or should not be permitted to prescribe marijuana for their patients. Only 18% opposed doctors writing prescriptions for cannabis while 81% believed they should be allowed to do so.
Recently, the federal Veterans Affairs Department issued a directive that surprised many. Service men and women who are treated at VA hospitals and outpatient facilities will be allowed to use medical marijuana in the 14 US states where it is currently legal. While the regulation does not give VA doctors authorization to prescribe the drug, it does allow clinics in the 14 states to continue the use of marijuana in the case of veterans who already were using it. While the issue continues to be hotly debated, it does appear that legalizing marijuana for some medical uses is quietly gaining support nationwide.

Medical Marijuana: A Real Hot Potato

Imagine walking into your office one morning and finding out that your credit card services had been terminated overnight. They were cut off not for lack of payment and not for being involved in an illegal business, but rather they were cut off for indeterminate "unacceptable business practices." This is a reality facing many owners of medical marijuana dispensaries who get "creative" with their applications; and if you fabricated your application it can be a legitimate termination - but that isn't always the case.
Left Without Service
The story above isn't uncommon. It happened recently to Alternative Medical Choice, Inc., a consultation service based in Oregon. What does AMC do that got them in trouble with their service provider Intuit? AMC is a business which offers consultations with doctors for the approval of medical cannabis use under Oregon law. Even though the clinic does not dispense or distribute medical cannabis, it has lost its services.
Intuit states that they terminated services because AMC did not reveal its involvement with medical marijuana. When further questioned about terminating some 3000 other accounts they hold with clinics offering the same services, they stated that they would not be terminating those accounts because they didn't feature medical cannabis on their web pages. AMC offered to remove the reference, but Intuit won't reestablish the account because "now we know."
PayPal, the online payment service, has also terminated accounts associated with medical marijuana consultation references.
DEA, FDA, IOM and Other Alphabet Soup
Part of the problem businesses face stems from the question of whether or not marijuana is actually medicinal. The DEA and the US government hold the position that smoking marijuana has no medical value. The American Cancer Society, the AMA and the AAP all agree that smoking is not an optimal way in which to gain any benefits, if they exist. Alternate methods of ingestion are being investigated.
Even the large Institute of Medicine study frequently cited by proponents of medicinal marijuana actually opposes the use of smoked marijuana for medical benefits. The study found that there were some "potentially therapeutic" benefits to cannabinoid drugs, primarily THC, but that other available medications offered better results. The lack of standardization, the method of dosage and other factors all lead to the IOM rejecting the idea of more studies.
Where Do We Go Next?
Just like many other hot potatoes, few people want to handle this one. For those who have opened dispensaries, the challenges involved in obtaining traditional financing, accounts and services have sometimes become overwhelming. For others who remain in the business, alternatives are available.
While selling cannabis online remains illegal, the Internet is a good place to search for companies willing and even eager to enter the market. By searching specifically for merchant account providers familiar with the risks involved in legal medical marijuana sales, entrepreneurs can find the services they require without obfuscation.
With 15 states and the District of Columbia already de-criminalizing the sale of marijuana products for medicinal purposes it is likely that the issue will come to a head soon. Some states, such as California, are planning to charge dispensaries sales tax on all of their transactions - leaving such a cash cow alone when state coffers are stripped bare is unimaginable. The question remains: how will the federal government respond to the move?
Is it About Money or Perception?
It is easy to imagine the government moving in either direction.
Cannabis remains illegal in most of the world, and possession is considered a capital offense in many countries. The US government is unlikely to want global opinion to be so effected. On the other hand, the taxes provided by legalizing an already flourishing industry could reach $2-6 billion.
Unfortunately for merchants, there is no conclusive argument at this time. Obtaining business services will remain difficult and sudden terminations likely until all government agencies, state, local and federal are on the same page.

Conspiracy Or Not, The Banning of Medical THC is Killing Millions

The United States government launched a highly successful anti-marijuana campaign back in the 1930's that led to the end of the hemp industry and the outlawing of medical marijuana. Since then, people opposed to the prohibition have asked why they did it. Most point their fingers at Big Business, particularly the pharmaceutical industry and other industries that were threatened by the hemp paper and textile industries. Others dismiss these critics as wild "conspiracy nuts." The fact is, it doesn't really matter why THC is illegal. What matters is the fact that millions of people needlessly suffer and die every year because they cannot make use of the safest and most effective proven cure for cancer the world has ever known: THC.
The Paper Industry Conspiracy Theory
Back in 1930, the U.S. government formed the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN). The FBN instigated America's first "War on Drugs." Between 1930 and 1934, the bureau, under Harry Anslinger's leadership, focused its efforts on opiates. Then, for inexplicable reasons, it targeted marijuana, a substance the American public knew best as a medicinal herb and had no previous history of widespread abuse or addiction.
Helped by funding by business giants William Randolph Hearst and the Dupont Chemical Corporation, the FBN launched a major anti-marijuana propaganda campaign. The Hearst newspaper group printed lurid stories about hideous crimes that were being committed by crazed marijuana addicts. Suddenly, a previously disinterested public was in a panic over the evils of marijuana. The success of this campaign led to the passage of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 and hemp was no longer a threat to Hearst's pulp mills or Dupont's patented chemicals that are vital in the manufacture of paper from trees.
The Pharmaceutical Industry Conspiracy Theory
The case against "Big Pharma" is so exhaustive one cannot encapsulate it in a few words. The enshrining of synthetic drugs as mankind's only hope for medical salvation goes back to the Flexner Report of 1908, when the report's author, Abraham Flexner, advocated stricter criteria for entry into medical schools. While an argument can be put forward that this was a sincere attempt to improve medical training, Flexner was openly contemptuous of practitioners of plant based "folk medicine" and after his recommendations were accepted, all colleges and universities that taught traditional medicine were either closed or dropped it from their curriculum. By 1935, the number of medical schools in the United States was half what it was at the turn of the century. Today, all of the remaining schools depend on the pharmaceutical industry for their funding. As a result, the only kind of medicine a physician learns today is medicine that benefits the pharmaceutical industry and it is illegal for a physician to administer or even recommend alternative, plant based treatments for any disorder.
It would be nice to think that everyone in the medical establishment was working together for the public good, but the evidence overwhelmingly shows that our welfare is the least of their concerns. One glaring example of this is the 1974 study conducted by researchers at the Medical College of Virginia. When they discovered that THC was shrinking tumors in their laboratory mice, the FDA responded by shutting down their National Institute of Health funded program and suppressing the release of the clinical data. The NIH, in turn, responded by cutting off their funding, because they failed in their mission to find evidence that THC damaged the immune system.
The news that naturally extracted THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, cured cancer was so disturbing that President Nixon signed a law in 1976 prohibiting any researchers outside of the pharmaceutical industry from studying the medical benefits of cannabis. In the thirty years since then, these companies have concentrated their efforts on finding ways to make a synthetic THC that does not produce a "high" while they continue to market expensive and deadly chemical treatments for cancer.
The Theory of Evolution was not entirely Charles Darwin's discovery. Other scientists had been discussing it for centuries behind closed doors because they risked persecution if they publicly put forward their theories. Darwin just happened to come along at a time in history when the power of the church was on the wane. Today, those who have discovered that THC, a natural cancer treatment, is the world's safest and most effective treatment for cancer and its only known cure are fighting the same kinds of medieval prejudices evolutionary scientists faced in earlier centuries. Hopefully, one day we will all be laughing at the ignorance of the High Priests of medicine who have been working so hard to keep the truth from us for so long. In the meantime, though, over 1500 people in the United States continue to die from cancer each and every day.

Five Dramatic Developments In The Health Care Industry

Medical science has made some shocking developments in the past twenty years. For the first time, our technology is reaching the point where we have to question our moral right to "play God". It could even turn out that medical science will revolutionize the 21st century to the same degree that computer science revolutionized the 20th century. At the same time, present factors of society lay new challenges on the health care industry. The purpose of this article is to highlight some of the frontiers being explored in the health care field as well as some new economic and political developments that affect the industry, and perhaps even forecast what kind of impact they will have on the health care careers of tomorrow.

Stem cells. Boy, does this topic raise some debate! Embryonic stem cells are looked to at least as a potential cure for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, and possibly other neurological disorders as well. But if we were to routinely start using stem cells as treatment, the moral implications would be that we are essentially aborting a fetus, taking one life to save another. Of course, stem cells aren't quite a fetus yet, and that's where the debate is raging in this gray area between what we know, what we think we know, and what we have yet to find out.

The scientific research of stem cells is currently hogtied by the political debate. The science is way ahead of the money, with research labs having a difficult time getting funding for such a controversial field. One thing many have pointed out is that no matter what laws the United States passes, some country, somewhere, will eventually start exploring the uses of stem cells anyway. That kind of forces our hand, reducing our choice to either leading the way in the field where we can at least establish oversight to apply standards to the research that we can all agree are fair, or be left out of the game and have to deal with developments in other countries that might be even less comfortable for us to deal with.

Stem cells can help sufferers of neurological disease by producing dopamine, a neurotransmitter whose deficiency in the brain is a symptom of diseases like Parkinson's. For that matter, stem cells can be encouraged to grow into fresh replacement brain cells altogether. That's just scratching the surface of what we can do with stem cells, and it's that potential power that makes some people nervous.

Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. Vietnam veterans returned with their Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the effects of Agent Orange. The first Iraq war gave us Gulf War Syndrome. Now with the war in Afghanistan and Iraq war number two, the health care field is holding it's collective breath waiting to see what impact the war will have on health care resources in the future. It is not a question of "if", but a question of "how much" and "how long".

Soldiers who have been exposed to depleted uranium in Iraq have already been diagnosed with cancer. Busloads of returning veterans are showing up at hospitals with psychological problems severe enough to pose a suicide risk. A comprehensive study done in 2004 estimates the likelihood of soldiers to develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder to be 18% in the Iraq war and 11% in the Afghanistan war. In addition, PTSD is more likely to develop in repeated heavy combat exposure, and with the number of times soldiers have been sent home and called back we would be fooling ourselves if we expected them to survive without some stress damage.

Add to this a factor that munitions technology is constantly pushing forward, and Governments don't always have time to analyze the affects on soldier's health when they are exposed to chemicals and residue on the battle field. We may have just handed out health care system a bigger burden that it can handle, by the time the wars are over.

Microbubbles. Take any oily solution, froth it into a frappe with a high concentration of tiny bubbles, and inject those into your bloodstream. Now you hit them with ultrasound and a nearly perfect image of your internal organs will bounce back. Cleared by the FDA in the late 1990's for use in imaging applications, microbubbles are starting to be an attractive alternative to traditional methods of internal imaging, being both cheaper and faster than an MRI.

But wait, there's more. Researchers have discovered another use for microbubbles, as tiny little carriers for targeted doses of medicine. For instance, drugs can be delivered directly to a tumor using microbubbles; once at the target location, the microbubbles can be induced to pop, releasing their medicine payload and reducing the need to bombard the entire body with radioactive material, for instance. Sometimes it's the simple things that change our methods the most!

Medical marijuana. Separating ourselves from the image of hippies toking a bong-load, the active ingredient in marijuana is cannabinoids, which is a unique group of secondary metabolites found in the cannabis plant - which just happens to be where the plant's peculiar pharmacological effects come from. Cannabinoids have been explored here and there over the years, but recent research has produced a staggering array of applications.

Cannabinoids have potential to treat Alzheimer's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, diabetes mellitus, dystonia, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal disorders, gliomas, hepatitis C, hypertension, incontinence, osteoporosis, pruritis, rheumatoid arthritis, sleep apnea, and Tourette's syndrome. More than the past meek suggestion by the scientific community that cannabis has some uses, it is rapidly becoming apparent that we may have been turning our backs on a miracle drug the entire time.

The autism epidemic. One of the most mysterious neurological disorders of recent times may have finally gotten a break. Research into the causes of autism has revealed some intriguing clues - if anything, autism may yet be a path to increasing our understanding of how the brain works. We already know that children with autism have characteristic abnormalities in the cerebellum, the brain structure responsible for coordinating complex voluntary muscle movements.

New research points to a possible culprit: a newly discovered class of nerve cells in the brain called mirror neurons. These neurons appear to be involved in mental functions such as empathy and the perception of another individual's intentions. It has been suggested that a dysfunction of the mirror neuron system could result in some of the symptoms of autism.

Autism has seen a sharp rise in the past two decades, but there exists the possibility that previous cases were simply undiagnosed. Moreover, there may be present misdiagnoses of autism where in fact there are other related disorders that only share some of the symptoms. Progress in this field is slow and tedious, but small amounts of progress are now at least providing some hope that we will eventually be better equipped to treat this disorder. Dare we even hope for an eventual cure?

Hemp is a largely misunderstood and underutilized plant that is found the world over. It was actually one of the very first plants that man cultivated. It is also one of the most versatile and useful plants ever grown. Hemp is also known as Cannabis or Cannabis Sativa and has been previously used for millennia in Egypt and China as medicine.

The plant and its advocates have been criticized for the indulgent use of higher tetrahychlorocannabinol concentration plants by some people who dry or compress hemp into marijuana and hashish. Because of this, attempts to make hemp gain respect in the worldwide market have been thwarted by its critics. People should note however that industrial grade hemp has a lot less TCE in it which makes it useless as a psychoactive substance.

This versatile plant has been used for a very long time to do things like make clothes, paper, medicine, ropes and fuel in different parts of the world. Before petroleum became a major fuel source, most lamp oil was made from hemp seed.

Irrespective of how a minor part of the human population may abuse different forms of hemp, the truth is that it is very useful when it is used for industrial reasons.

Hemp Fabric.

People have been using hemp to make things such as clothing, rope as well as canvas fabrics for a very long time. Before the industrial revolution came most of the textiles that were worn at the time had their origins in the hemp plant. Fabrics that are made from hemp are a whole lot stronger, durable and longer lasting than a lot of other materials. The same thing goes for their durability and insulating properties. Hemp fibers may also last up to three times longer than cotton fibers. Most hemp materials were usually made of coarser fibers in the past but advances in plant breeding have created a fabric that is softer and finer in nature and also equally capable of making durable and long-lasting clothing material.

Its Medicinal Uses.

Some people have abused the use of high TCE-containing hemp products in order to make "feel good" drugs. The truth remains however that in many parts of the world, the hemp flower has been used to make medicinal products for years. Since it is also rich in nutritional fats and vitamins it is also used to make balms, slaves and nutritional supplements. A lot of over-the-counter drugs may contain some form of hemp be it in flowers, seeds or oils. One benefit that can be derived from using hemp in medicine is that it causes no allergies. No cases of death, overdosing or allergic reactions have been documented in the case of hemp and hemp products.

Industrial hemp is legal to grow in 29 countries of the world, and exempt from strict international drug treaties and laws but the United States continues to forbid the general production of hemp plants and products on its own soil. This is despite the positive nature of its many benefits. A number of growers are permitted to grow hemp plants in the U.S but this is under strict regulations. Other countries such as Canada which shares a border with the U.S, has a liberal policy concerning the growth of the lower TCE-breed plant for industrial purposes.

From Sanctification to Demonization - A Short History of Hemp Products in America

Until the 20th century, there was no debate about the value of hemp and its derivatives. They used paper made from hemp to print the King James Bible and cloth made from hemp to sew the American flag. Doctors routinely prescribed medicines made from hemp oil to treat a variety of illnesses. Although the plant was freely available and the authorities actually encouraged its cultivation, there was never a drug problem, real or imagined, associated with its use. What changed and why?

The beginning of the end came for both hemp fiber and medical marihuana in 1930 with the formation of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. During his first years of tenure, the director of the FBN, Harry J. Anslinger was more interested in creating and enforcing laws related to the distribution and use of opiates. In 1934, however, he changed his tune and under his orders, the FBN began an extensive anti-marijuana propaganda program.

There are several theories about why Anslinger made marijuana the focus of his War on Drugs when there were addictive drugs like heroin that logically would have made better targets. One of the strongest theories revolves around the fact that hemp as an industrial cash crop was threatening the interests of the Dupont Corporation and William Randolph Hearst. Dupont had a monopoly on producing the chemicals necessary for making paper from trees but no investment in the rapidly growing hemp paper industry. Hearst, who had a huge financial stake in timber forests and paper mills, was concerned about competition from hemp paper manufacturers.

Be that as it may, the lurid stories of depravity and violence that the Hearst newspapers and other media published during this period had their desired effect and the remarkable medicinal qualities of marijuana became completely overshadowed by its imagined dangers. The government passed the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 with little difficulty, thanks largely to its successful cannabis smear campaign. With the added burden of a heavy tax, hemp became too expense to produce as an industrial crop and the outlawing of its distribution made it impossible to legally use for medical purposes. From there, it was just a short step to criminalizing its use for any purpose whatsoever.

The first three decades of the 1900's were bad years for medical marijuana in other ways, as well. The 1908 Flexner Report recommended that only schools that taught allopathic medicine and biomedicine (theoretical medicine) be allowed to offer university degrees in the medical sciences. As a result, by 1935, the number of medical schools in America halved and the teaching and study of plant based medicines virtually ended. In effect, the Flexner Report led to the sanctification of the pharmaceutical industry and the relegation of plant-based medicine to the realm of ineffective "folk medicine."

In spite of numerous scientific studies and case histories that prove that THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, is the most effective treatment for cancer in the world, the campaign against it continues relentlessly. In the meantime, millions of people needlessly continue to suffer and die. The treatments sanctified by the government, the American Cancer Society and the medical establishment are brutal and ineffective, yet they continue to dig in their heels and deny the facts. Marijuana and Cancer - Governmental Arrogance Buries Viable Cancer Therapies

It seems that nearly everyone in government fancies himself superior to the rest of us in knowledge and judgment. There is no telling how much beneficial, not to mention vital, research and knowledge have been lost as a result of the arrogant whims of the few who consider themselves the elite among us, simply on the basis of having engineered themselves into a position of power. A depressing example of this arrogance is reflected in the fiasco surrounding research into the medical benefits of marijuana.
Way back in 1974, the National Institute of Health funded research at Medical College of Virginia. Their mission was to prove the contention that marijuana damages the immune system. In funding this research, the NIH was destined to be roundly disappointed - they effectively shot themselves in the foot. Rather than receiving confirmation and supporting evidence of their contention, the NIH people were annoyed to learn that the MCV researchers found instead, that THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, undeniably slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice.
Since this failed miserably in bolstering the government's case against marijuana, in their view the most noxious of all weeds, and in fact proved just the opposite, the DEA came charging into the fray, banners flying, trumpets blaring. They shut down the Virginia study along with all other cannabis tumor research.
Not to be outdone in the public assault on a useful albeit often misused plant and substance, President Gerald Ford got on the bandwagon in 1976, and put an end to all cannabis research while simultaneously granting that right exclusively to the maniacally delighted pharmaceutical industry.
Then again, in 1983, in accommodation to intense lobbying and reception of massive campaign contributions, the Reagan/Bush administration tried hard to persuade American Universities and researchers to destroy all of the 1966-76 cannabis research work, including compendiums in libraries. They were partially successful. Large amounts of information have disappeared.
But all this negative effort is like trying to hold back the dawn. The facts keep cropping up in spite of the best efforts of vested interests to bury them. In February of 2000, another confirmation of marijuana's cancer fighting abilities came out of Madrid. Researchers there had destroyed incurable brain cancer tumors in rats by injecting them with THC. This confirmed the earlier Virginia study.
The news of this discovery has been virtually non-existent in the United States. The New York Times ignored the story. So did the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. These papers receive major advertising revenues from the pharmaceutical industry, which by the way, employs two lobbyists for each and every member of congress.
As public pressure to allow the use of medicinal marijuana continues to build, more and more politicians are being induced to taking a closer look at the facts. Its strong support by patients and medical professionals is beginning to be felt. More and more states are adopting compassionate laws toward medicinal marijuana as many patients clamor for the substance to relieve the symptoms and side effects of chemo.
The nausea, vomiting, pain, and insomnia that are typically a consequence of conventional cancer therapy, cripple a patient's quality of life. Marijuana, smoked, vaporized, infused in teas, or baked in foods, can dramatically restore a patient's place in the world. Noting this has induced the entire oncology community to endorse its use.
The pharmaceutical companies, hard pressed to compete against this tidal wave of sentiment, have isolated the active compound in marijuana, delta-9-tetrahydrolcanabinol, THC, and made a synthetic version of it available by prescription. But it doesn't work nearly as well as plain old marijuana, it doesn't work at all on some people, it takes from 45 minutes to 2 hours to take effect when it does work, and it will set a patient back about $ 800.00 a month. Not really a good alternative.
Medicinal marijuana is not without its own side effects. Anxiety, drowsiness, dry mouth, slow reaction times, and loss of short term memory are among them. Patients using this substance for medicinal purposes will experience varying side effects. Everyone reacts differently to its use and it is very important to buy marijuana from an authorized source. Other drugs or harmful substances are often added by unscrupulous criminal dealers.
Doctors treating cancer patients are in critical need to be kept informed of all drugs taken by their patients, including marijuana, over-the-counter, prescription, or homeopathic remedies. It's very important to keep in mind that marijuana, at this point, is not a form of treatment and is not curative. It is used only to treat cancer symptoms like pain, and to relieve the side effects of treatment.
Fourteen states have legalized the use of medicinal marijuana. They are: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. Each state has its own rules and regulations regarding its use and these need to be complied with. Most states require registration with supporting documentation and certification by a physician. This should by no means be construed as an endorsement for the indiscriminate use of marijuana. The substance has some very serious negative side effects and needs to be treated like any other drug. If you don't need it, stay away from it.

Uses of Medical Marijuana

Medical research indicates that medical marijuana and smoked cannabis reduce neuropathic pain and improve the calorie intake in patients who suffer from reduced muscle mass as well as muscle spasticity that is commonly observed in serious and irreversible auto-immune disorders like Multiple Sclerosis (MS). These medical properties have gradually lead to the large scale clinical research and development of a large number of cannabinoid-based medicines as well as other alternate delivery methods
Medical Marijuana and Cancer
Cannabis is known to reduce the sensation of extreme nausea and pain that affects all chemotherapy patients. Medical practitioners of integrative oncology and healthcare providers prescribe MMJ to induce sound sleep and stimulate appetite. MMJ not only helps patients manage their symptoms but also has a beneficial antitumor property.
Medical Marijuana and Arthritis
Over 31 million Americans are afflicted with either rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis that affect the joints, resulting in swelling and pain that restricts normal movement. Right from the 1700s, cannabis has been used in Western medicine for the treatment of muscular pains due to its immune-modulation, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Research indicates that it is highly effective when used to treat extremely painful conditions that include, but are not limited to degenerative joint, hip, and connective tissue disorders like rheumatoid arthritis. It can also be used as a supplemental form of therapy that enhances the effectiveness of opium-based painkillers and NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). MMJ reduces joint inflammation and morning stiffness when is metabolized by the body in its Cannabidiol form.
Medical Marijuana and Multiple Sclerosis
Nearly 350,000 Americans currently suffer from the painful and debilitating medical disorder known as MS (Multiple Sclerosis). This neurological disease is known to affect people between the age groups of 20 to 40 and occurs more commonly in women. The symptomatology of this disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) varies on a case-by-case basis and some of the commonly observed symptoms include increased muscle spasticity that results in loss of function, pain, spasms, etc. An estimated 4% of the patient population who use MMJ have experienced tremendous relief from their symptoms as cannabis is known to reduce muscle spasticity and tremors. It also has a positive effect by slowing the autoimmune attack that is the underlying pathogenic process in this painful condition. MMJ affects the CNS and motor systems and helps people develop better bladder control, helps them regain their balance, speech, and eyesight.

The Health Benefits of Ingesting Rather Than Smoking Alternative Medicine

The most common way of using medical marijuana is by smoking it, yet there are healthier and more effective ways of experiencing its benefits. It is a little known fact that marijuana can also be ingested. In this article various alternative methods to smoking medical marijuana including ways of ingesting and vaporizing are explored. We will also look at some health damaging side effects of smoking.
When compared with smoking, ingesting offers the biggest advantage of preventing dangerous carcinogenic chemicals and tar from entering the body's respiratory system. Besides, smoking cannabis results in an extensive loss of other cannabinoids and THC due to their decomposition at high temperature. But, when it is ingested, a much higher percentage of the active ingredients or constituents enter the body. Ingesting marijuana is healthier for you, the only disadvantage being that ingestion is not a cost-effective option because relatively larger amount of medical marijuana is required to boost its effectiveness. But, the overall high that preparations infused with marijuana creates last longer and is also stronger.
Medical Marijuana dispensaries suggest that there are several ways of ingesting marijuana by mixing it with either a solid or a liquid base. THC from the bud and the fibers of the plant can be absorbed by the digestive system. However, it cannot be release unless it binds to alcohol or a fatty acid as it is a fat soluble component. Liquids like water, soda, ethyl or grain alcohol, or lemonade can be used. Though even cannabis tea that is made by brewing marijuana with tea leaves is mildly psychoactive, these water based infusions are not very effective because the water solubility of THC is low due to its lipophilic nature.
The solid base that is used when cannabis is cooked includes butter, oil, lard, or other fat. Hashed brown potatoes, brownies, cookies, pancakes, and other baked products enable the oral consumption of marijuana.
Cannabis vaporizers comprise flame filter and vaporization pipes and when the marijuana is heated in them, the active ingredients in it get evaporated instead of burning up that happens when it is smoked. Depending on the design of the vaporizer, lower proportion of toxic chemicals and carbon monoxide are released.
One of the latest cannabis products are flavored medicated suckers that use high quality THC, CBN, and CBD and are made using hash oil and ethanol extracts. These contain more than 30 mg THC and 6 to 7 mg CBD.

Proven Facts on the Benefits of Marijuana For Arthritis Patients

Proven Facts on the Benefits of Marijuana for Arthritis Patients
Any number of marijuana users, whether medicinal or recreational, will tell you that "Mary J" is great for relaxation. In fact, you would probably receive a list of problems the drug has helped relieve or alleviate all together.
As an arthritis patient looking for alternatives to synthesized medicines, unable to use traditional medications or physically unreceptive to traditional medication, you may be skeptical. You may be disbelieving. You may, in fact, consider marijuana users to be a little lacking in the intelligence quotient, merely trying to make their drug use acceptable.
However, as the title of this article indicates, there is scientifically proven evidence that medicinal marijuana can, indeed, provide relief from arthritic pain.
What is Medicinal Marijuana?
First, it must be noted that there are two major differences between medicinal marijuana and commercial or "street" marijuana.
1. Commercial marijuana can come from any number of cannabis strains. Different strains have varying pain relieving, anti-inflammatory, etc. potencies. The potency of commercial marijuana can't be guaranteed. Medicinal marijuana strains, on the other hand, are chosen for specifically for their potency and effects.
2. Some commercial marijuana has been fertilized with unsafe fertilizers. These fertilizers may contain metal derivatives and other toxic substances or by-products. Medicinal marijuana is fertilized carefully, with the health of the patient in mind, with nontoxic fertilizers.
It is not recommended that one buy commercial marijuana (or marihuana) to replace a prescription for medicinal marijuana.
Proven Benefits of Marijuana for Arthritis Patients
Although the legal aspects in many countries, funding and other issues inhibit the number of studies on the therapeutic aspects of marijuana, there is still a surprising amounts of information available. The facts so far are clear:
- Marijuana has shown to be an anti-inflammatory

- The potential for cannabis use to help inflammation and muscle spasms have been proven for several illnesses

- Marijuana has been used as a pain treatment for hundreds of years, if not thousands (some records date back to B.C.)

- Studies suggest that marijuana may not only help inflammation, but may lower the actual growth of the disease itself
Dr. Tom Mikuriya, a member of Mensa and several well-known organizations studying medicinal marijuana, wrote in 2002:
"Clinical interviews of over 6500 members at cannabis buyers clubs and patients in my office practice lead to this generalization: Many illnesses or conditions present with both inflammation and muscle spasm. Cannabis is both an antispasmodic and anti inflammatory."
Well known and respected as an authority on the therapeutic uses of marijuana, Dr Mikuriya also states "Chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis and lumbosacral disease responds well to cannabis compared with other analgesics."
In 2005, Rheumatology Advance Access online published a study by Dr. Blake et al of the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath. Noted as "the first controlled trial of a CBM [cannabis based medicine] in the symptomatic treatment of RA in humans", the study was based on several facts:
- Marijuana has historically been used as a pain treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, although its therapeutic potential has never been evaluated in a clinical study.
- THC and CBD, the two main components of marijuana, have been recognized as "key therapeutic constituents that act synergistically together and with other plant constituents."
- THC has shown pain relieving abilities for both nociceptive and neropathic pain.
- CBD has shown the ability to block the progression of rheumatoid arthritis, while both THC and CBD have anti-inflammatory effects.
"In comparison with placebo, the CBM produced statistically significant improvements in pain on movement, pain at rest, quality of sleep, DAS28 and the SF-MPQ pain at present component. There was no effect on morning stiffness but baseline scores were low. The large majority of adverse effects were mild or moderate, and there were no adverse effect-related withdrawals or serious adverse effects in the active treatment group."
Due to the surprising responses, the researchers ended the study with a call for more studies. "We believe this to be the first controlled study of a CBM in rheumatoid arthritis, and the results are encouraging. The beneficial effects occurred in the context of a dosing regime restricted to evening dosing in order to minimize any possible intoxication-type reactions. However, 24-h dosing with this CBM (Sativex) using a self-titration regime in the context of multiple sclerosis resulted in only minimal intoxication scores [9]. Larger, more prolonged studies of CBM in rheumatoid arthritis are indicated."
In 2006, the Center of Drug Discovery in Boston, Massachusetts published a study entitled The Cannabinergic System as a Target for Anti-inflammatory Therapies. With habitual cannabis use proven to affect the immune system, endocannabinoid research has helped to understand the effects through cell-based or in vivo animal testing.
According to the study, these tests "suggest that regulation of the endocannabinoid circuitry can impact almost every major function associated with the immune system.... the results suggest therapeutic opportunities for a variety of inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, atherosclerosis, allergic asthma, and autoimmune diabetes through modulation of the endocannabinoid system."
Although many a naysayer mentions the potentials for overdose, it must be noted that there has never been one documented case of someone overdosing on marijuana, whether through recreational or medicinal use. As well, many are concerned about cancer-causing agents through inhaling the smoke, but a comprehensive study in 2006 could show no proof of marijuana causing lung cancer.
Finally, remember that medical marijuana should not be smoked. Using it in baking or with a vaporizer will offer the therapeutic benefits needed to alleviate arthritis symptoms.

Why Do People Smoke Cannabis?

There's an issue that's frequently requested - so why do people smoke cannabis?

Globally, marijuana is easily the most generally used street drug. A 2007 survey discovered that 14.4 million folks the America alone had smoked cannabis at least one time within the last thirty days.

You will find a number of reasons that individuals take drugs and that we certainly do not have all of the solutions. However, you will find some classic mental reasons that individuals start and then smoke weed that people can explore.

Mental reasons

The mental causes of taking drugs could be like the reasons that individuals buy things, visit certain websites or choose an impulsive or momentary strategy at any particular time.

While dopamine transmitters constitute only one Percent from the brain they "are wired" in the most crucial parts.

Dopamine is generally connected using the "reward system", supplying feelings of delight and reinforcement to motivate someone to perform certain activities.

Dopamine is launched and rewards encounters for example food, sex, and drugs.

The purpose of dopamine transmitters is not fully understood however it could explain a number of "urges" in human behavior. We'll naturally be drawn to any action that delivers an incentive. It might explain why humans will require drugs to have an immediate reward whenever a long term negative effect is fully understood.

Here's an action flow diagram which might explain the procedure:

Requirement for existence to alter > Do something > Receive benefit > Learn association

We are conditioned to look for food and therefore are compensated with nourishment in addition to a "dopamine reward" that is then learned therefore the process could be repeated. Drugs may also provide us with an optimistic experience (the "high") which combined having a "dopamine reward" that is then "learned" and encourages habitual behavior.

This could explain the circular causation that lots of addicts experience. They're bored (hunger), take drugs (nourishment), are compensated, discover the association, and so the the next time the positive associations are strengthened thus developing a habit.

So, everyone has dopamine transmitters only some people take drugs. What exactly would be the some other reasons?

To suit in / pressure from peers

Among the most powerful mental factors to describe behavior is famous by a number of expressions for example "monkey see, monkey do", "pressure from peers" and "social proof". This is often referred to like a copying or resembling of behavior we have seen around us.

For a number of reasons we're conditioned to complete as others around us do. So, simply enough, if you will find many people smoking weed around us, we will probably follow.

This pressure to suit in could be a more effective among more youthful people as everyone knows. However, taking drugs simply to easily fit in isn't the whole picture and will not be understood this way. However, it might be a contributory factor.

Copying of role model / hero

One more reason why people smoke weed is allied towards the previous reason for copying behavior. People naturally attempt to copy the behavior of people which are locked in esteem with a peer group. So copying the drug taking habits of celebs could be described in by doing this.

Alcohol

Probably the most natural part models for most of us are their parents. Many children "learn" to consume alcohol using their parents after which once the results of this drug aren't appreciated marijuana can appear an appealing alternative.

Rebelling

Similarly, with respect to the individual and also the "stage" in adolescence or youthful their adult years, smoking grass can appear just like a method of distinguishing themselves using their parents.

Relax

Existence for everybody could be demanding sometimes. Youthful individuals are particularly prone to sudden bouts of stress and smoking dope is visible like a temporary release out of this tension

Experiment / take risks

Youthful people, males particularly, could be vulnerable to taking greater risks and also to experiment a lot more than people of other age range.

Religious

Many religions stress the significance of smoking cannabis to locate yourself emotionally.

Medicinal

Marijuana is proven to be a discomfort reliever for a number of conditions. For youthful women it may be particularly useful in combating period pains.

Inherited

And finally, there might be some evidence that the inclination to become hooked on mind-changing substances might be hereditary.

Medical Marijuana - Gaining Acceptance

Medical marijuana has actually been around for eons but had been prohibited in most countries for many years. Lately, however, various nations have begun to recognize its worth in the healthcare arena. Therefore, legalization of the plant is taking hold globally as well as in the United States of America. New Jersey is the most recent state to vote "Yes" for its legalization.

It is derived from a plant called cannabis. It is often green or brown and consists of leaves, seeds and stems. While thought of over the last several decades as a strictly recreational drug, its therapeutic abilities have begun to be accepted by many.

New Jersey is the fourteenth place in the U.S. to allow its legality with the passing of "New Jersey Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana Act". While the name sounds like a gentle law, it's actually the toughest American version of its kind. Some lawmakers in the east coast are worried that it will get out of hand with certain loopholes. The loopholes reportedly are there to expand its use if necessary, by allowing the list of "debilitating medical conditions" to be added to by health officials.

A former U.S. attorney who is now the Governor-elect, Chris Christie, is especially unhappy with what he perceives as the looseness of its language. Christie claims that California is an example of a state who has become out-of-control regarding cannabis for medicinal purposes and doesn't want his place to follow suit.

The strictness of the New Jersey law lies in its requirement of purchasing the substance only via a state regulated "alternative treatment center". It is the only state to require this route of obtaining the drug; all other states allow home cultivation.

It has medicinal properties and has helped with the following health conditions:

- Cancer

- Glaucoma

- Positive HIV/AIDS diagnosis

- Seizure

The loophole-language contained in the "New Jersey Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana" states that this current list of health conditions can be added to at the discretion of the state health department. Other conditions that such marijuana is claimed to assist with by other countries and states include arthritis, brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, nausea resulting from chemotherapy, epilepsy, asthma, and migraines.

If a person needs to seek out a prescription writing doctor, he or she should search the internet in order to find alternative treatment centers in their area. They should be prepared to bring health records and current prescriptions and to be examined by a physician in order to receive the okay to purchase marijuana for medicinal purposes.

In Riverside medical marijuana providers can now sell medical cannabis to patients who suffer from a number of conditions such as AIDS, cancer, gastritis, insomnia, anorexia and more. They are dedicated to providing compassionate and knowledgeable service. To know more, visit http://thcmd4u.com

Places to Avoid Getting a Medical Marijuana Authorization

As of May 20th, 2011, the day this article is being written, there are a myriad of choices for patients to choose from, when it comes to choosing a clinic to get their Medical Marijuana Authorization in Washington State. Below are TWO places where patients should avoid getting their authorizations.

AVOID:

1. Dispensaries, or any place that produces or grows medicinal cannabis.

This almost seems like common sense, but many dispensaries (which are illegal anyway) are providing authorizations by contracting a doctor to work for them during specific days and hours.

Why should this be avoided? For one, many dispensaries are beginning to turn down authorizations that were obtained through dispensaries. Secondly, there is current legislature that will soon make this kind of activity (providing authorizations in a dispensary environment) illegal. Here is an excerpt from Senate Bill 5073 (currently in Washington State Senate as of May 20th, 2011):

[Lines 11-13, Page 11] "A health care professional shall not [...] Examine or offer to examine a patient for purposes of diagnosing a terminal or debilitating medical condition at a location where cannabis is produced, processed, or dispensed;"

While this is not current law, it is still important to avoid dealing with dispensaries (illegal). Dispensaries are unlikely to verify you as a patient, because they don't file or store any medical records or patient files, or don't have the medical infrastructure or staff that would be able to provide that service. While the doctor that was contracted to serve you may be able to file your record and verify for you, it is unlikely they will, or at least a risk is there.

2. "Clinics" that exist for the sole purpose of handing out authorizations.

This can be difficult to gauge. But, a good test is to see if the doctor you see for your medical marijuana evaluation, could also see you for other medical issues, like a flu, a cold, or any other ailment. Please check your doctor's credentials; are they an MD? Are they licensed? Anyone can throw on a robe and run an operation out of a rented office space. It is important to check if their practice is legitimate.

Moreover, these clinics will soon be phased out as well. Another excerpt from Senate Bill 5073:

[Lines 14-15, Page 11] "A health care professional shall not [...] Have a business or practice which consists solely of authorizing the medical use of cannabis;"

Conclusion: Why should we avoid these clinics NOW?

These "operations" if you will, are not working in the patient's interest. How can we tell? Well, they clearly are not monitoring state legislature and the changing laws. If they are not monitoring them now, what indicates they will monitor them later? Are they actively ensuring their compliance to legislature now and preparing themselves for the coming changes which are a little over a year away?

Are they actively consulting with patients and answering questions about the law they might have? Or are they happily going along and profiting while they can? A good way to gauge a clinic, is if they are compliant to SB5073 NOW. Are they still offering multi-year or lifetime authorizations? Are their doctors also providing alternative packages or options to medicinal cannabis? That is also a future change in law that will be a requirement.

Who should I choose?

Currently, our clinic in Redmond, WA is one of few clinics that operates in strict compliance with SB5073. In fact, we encourage all patients to try our alternative plans for treatment. We also only provide 1-year or less authorizations, and also enforce recurring visits throughout the year. We also establish care with our patients and become their primary care providers, to ensure their safety for future changing legislature.

Medical Marijuana and Glaucoma

Glaucoma is really a symptom in the attention that may eventually finish in blindness. From the 4 million People in America believed to possess some type of glaucoma, as much as half seem to be not aware from it.

Based on the World Health organization, glaucoma may be the second leading reason for blindness. Among African People in America, that statistic jumps to number 1.

Many people acquainted with glaucoma realize that the seniors are particularly prone to the problem, but anybody of all ages could be affected unexpectedly. Some investigation implies that glaucoma might be hereditary, but science continues to be unclear precisely what causes glaucoma to build up.

What has been discovered is, together with other medicines, medicinal marijuana has reduced the degeneration of vision triggered by glaucoma. Generally, pressure within the eye is among the reasons for glaucoma. Medicinal marijuana is advantageous because of a number of its chemicals reducing interocular pressure, also called IOP, up to twenty-5 %.

Some say this is an minor gain when comparing the dangerous unwanted effects of marijuana, but that conclusion is sort of biased and without true details. While marijuana may cause a heightened heart risk with a seniors patients, many people report virtually no unwanted effects whatsoever with regular, medicinal utilization of marijuana. That's far in the pages of possible unwanted effects and horror tales that is included with the weakest of prescription drugs.

Marijuana isn't a magical cure-all in treating glaucoma. You will find - and really should be - other medicines and remedies, including drops that further reduce pressure within the eye by dilation along with other means. Regrettably, a number of these techniques can lose their effectiveness with time, and also, since there's presently no known remedy for glaucoma, alternative healthcare means are not only seen more suitable, but necessary.

Researchers are working hard trying to produce a delivery system for glaucoma patients that will permit these to make use of medicinal marijuana with no need to smoke it. So far, alternative delivery systems for medicinal marijuana have shown less effective than inhalation, as well as consuming the guirana plant in small doses.

It's highly suggested that after age 40, routine eye inspections are given with a professional almost every other year. This can greatly reduce the odds recently stage glaucoma permanently affecting vision.

Legal Marijuana - Busting the Myths of Medical Cannabis

There are many myths concerning the effects of marijuana. Of all the ones you've heard, how many came from a reliable source? Do you REALLY trust what your friend's uncle says about the subject? Let us explore these myths in greater depth.

1. Marijuana is addicting.

False! Marijuana is not addicting. Medical studies have shown alcohol, nicotine, and even caffeine to all be more addicting than marijuana. Compare this to the drug OxyContin. Both medicines are used to treat severe pain, but in 2006, 20.4 million Americans illegally used OxyContin. Medical marijuana is a much safer alternative.

2. Marijuana has a negative effect on health.

There are thousands of deaths each year from various drugs approved by the FDA. Interestingly enough, there are ZERO reported cases where marijuana was listed as the cause of death. Many people fear the smoking of marijuana, relating it to the cancers cause by cigarettes. Keep in mind, smokers will go through twenty or more cigarettes a day, every day. Medicinal levels of marijuana are nowhere near that high.

3. Even if it doesn't cause death directly, marijuana weakens your immune system.

This claim is based on a test performed in 1980, stating that white blood cells transformed slower in reaction to threats when exposed to THC. Since then, such results have never been able to be replicated. The FDA has even approved Marinol, a synthetic form of THC, for the treatment of diseases that attack the immune system, such as HIV.

4. There is no medicinal use for marijuana.

Quite the opposite! Marijuana is used medically in California in the treatment of cancer, AIDS, arthritis, migraines, and anorexia. Studies show it can also be used alongside, or even instead of, current medications for those diagonsed with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and insomnia. Research is currently being conducted to test its effect on Alzheimer's disease.

5. Legal marijuana will be abused/illegally sold.

The idea of banning a medicine because others will abuse it is preposterous. Drugs such as sleeping pills and pain medications are abused daily, yet are sold over-the-counter. Also, if someone is unfortunate enough to have AIDS, and are depending on a medicine to prevent extreme pain, why would they willingly get rid of it?

These are only a few of the common myths about medical marijuana. Think about all the information you have about weed, and then decide if your sources are really that reliable. The stigma around this medicine is wrong, and needs to be reversed, for the sake of patients who could benefit from it. Learn the facts about marijuana and its medicinal purposes for yourself.
