Alternative Medicine Schools Teach Many Disciplines

The growth of alternative medicine schools has truly been phenomenal over the past few decades. With that expansion, society has had a remarkable shift in progressive acceptance toward alternative medicine, holistic health and other healing arts practices. This presumably reflects the rising need to transform conventional medicine because patient consumers are more likely to seek noninvasive health treatments over traditional medical care.

One of the many explanations for the diverse disciplines being offered at alternative medicine schools is primarily the increased interest in alternative medicine as a whole. Increasingly, future medical practitioners are seeking unconventional health education to explore alternatives through a natural healing school.

Some disciplines that are offered may include holistic medicine, transpersonal studies, ayurvedic medicine, naturopathic medicine, complementary medicine, herbal medicine, natural health medicine, homeopathy, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic, oriental medicine, bodywork (massage therapy, medical massage, shiatsu, etc.), wellness, nutrition, and many more.

Students who are in search of a quality alternative healing school should carefully review academic programs prior to enrollment. Logically, one should base his or her decision not only on the field offerings and cost, but should also determine whether the particular alternative medicine school provides certificate, diploma or degree programs.

In some cases, like that of acupuncture, chiropractic and naturopathy, students who have met all requirements for graduation may qualify for doctorate degrees (e.g., N.D., Doctor of Naturopathy; N.M.D., Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine; L.Ac., Master of Acupuncture, DC, Doctor of Chiropractic). Other alternative medicine schools that extend massage therapy, homeopathy and other natural healing arts programs may offer diploma or certificates to students who have successfully achieved completion of specific coursework.

In addition, alternative medicine schools often provide the necessary education and training to health practitioners who will ultimately need to be licensed. For example, practicing acupuncturists must be licensed prior to practicing this alternative health treatment.

Alternative medicine schools have come a long way and instill a sense of pride in the professionalism and vital research that they contribute, not only to their educational structure, but to the field of medicine as well.

Alternative Medicine - When to Use It and When Not

Some of the medical systems and therapies found on the alternative medicine list have been in service for thousands of years, in fact reaching back into prehistoric times to origins unknown. Some of these have remained unchanged for many centuries. Other entities in alternative medicine were a positive answer to the horrific early developments of allopathic medicine as it existed in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Others were the result of accidental discoveries in the relief or cure of certain ailments and health conditions. Modalities in alternative medicine range from highly efficacious to faulty, having no effect whatsoever to downright dangerous to human health. So how do you protect yourself from poor results, alas, life-threatening circumstances coming from the use of alternative medicine?

First, a bit about allopathic medicine.

This is your first step in determining whether alternative medicine is right for you in curing an ailment, pain management or any other health issue. Allopathic medicine has been so named due to its philosophy in treating for symptoms rather than restoring health from focusing on the causes of the ailment. Allopathic medicine is a biomedical entity, meaning it is highly specialized, its treatments are standardized and it is not holistic.

Albeit allopathic medicine holds first prize in having an incredibly large knowledge base about human health and disease. The system is empirically based, is scientific and its procedures rigorously tested. Allopathic medicine does have its dark side however and processes are not always in the best interest of the patient, especially since it is a for-profit industry and would go out of business if disease was eradicated.

An unlikely thing however, allopathic medicine wins the gold metal for its highly technical and effective procedures in medical emergencies and otherwise terminal conditions. Though it is not holistic and can be quite impersonal, the allopathic physician should always be consulted first for any medical condition which can have serious underlying problems.

Is Alternative Medicine No Good?

By all means, a resounding NO! Many medical systems and modalities outside of allopathic medicine are indeed highly efficacious and are great alternatives to the more expensive allopathic therapies and procedures. In non-emergency situations, alternative medicine can often provide equally effective, sometimes even better results without the side effects that often comes with chemical-based therapy.

Your alibi on the determination whether an alternative medicine is effective or is quackery comes from education. Also, what may work for one person may not work for another since each of us are different in our own right. Allopathic medicine has been standardized and through experimentation what a treatment should be is based on what is known to work on most people, caustic as it may be. Alternative medicine is not like this. It is composed of health systems and therapies which are individualized according to the patient and his needs.

Allopathic Medicine and Alternative Health

Though there are many reasons why an alternative health modality may not meet the approval of the American Medical Association (AMA,) the three main reasons are:

It either has not been tested or is not subject to scientific experimentation.
It has been tested and proven to be faulty, ineffective and/or detrimental in some way.
It has been tested but the results are unpredictable or is not useful to allopathic medicine.

Unless a modality has been proven to be a fake or is dangerous, and the health condition is not life threatening, there is little reason why it would be harmful to try it - especially those which have time-tested and have been known to produce positive results. Allopathic medicine does refer patients to complimentary therapy and at times alternative medicine. An example would be complementing or even replacing conventional chemical-based medications with hypnotherapy - a modality that has been proven to work on pain management.

Conclusion:

Alternative medicine can be used with or as a replacement for allopathic medicine if your regular physician deems it proper and you have been cleared of any detrimental underlying health issues. Common sense and education goes a long way. There is a vast quantity of resources out there in just about any health issue and their alternatives. Any modality or alternative medicine that has been around for a long time is probably a good source. They are often more thorough than allopathic medicine, are more personal and based on your individual needs. They focus on your whole being making them holistic.

Top rule here: Always see your regular physician first and follow his advice!

Alternative Medicine Guidelines

If you are thinking of using alternative medicine to address some of your health concerns, read on to find out more.

Alternative and complementary medicine is defined as varied health care and medical systems, products and practices that are not categorized as part of conventional medicine. Although there is scientific evidence that supports complementary alternative medicines (CAM), a lot of practices still lack credibility. Concerns on safety and effectiveness remain an open issue.

Some forms of alternative medicine have already been proven effective and safe and are accepted by traditional health care systems.

Complementary vis-à-vis alternative medicine

What is the difference between complementary and alternative medicine?

Complementary medicine is utilized with traditional medicine. An example of this is making use of aromatherapy to make patients be at ease after surgery. Another example is the use of acupuncture to minimize side effects of cancer treatments in patients.

On the other hand, alternative medicine completely replaces conventional medicine. Many practices and procedures are included in this broad category. An example of this is making use of a special dietary procedure rather than going through surgery or chemotherapy radiation in treating cancer. Most insurance companies do not provide coverage for these kinds of practices.

Integrative Medicine

You can also make use of what is known as integrative medicine, which mixes conventional medical treatments with complementary alternative medicine methods.

Integrative medicine is known as a complete approach to patient care and involves body, mind and spirit. An example of this is the use of relaxation techniques to minimize stress during chemotherapy sessions.

Take your pick from these types of medical treatments for your particular concern. You can choose from a variety of medical practices, whether conventional, complementary, alternative or integrative medicine, to suit your health needs. You should research thoroughly before doing anything.

Alternative Medicine - What Is Energy-Based Medicine And Is It Effective?

Nearly all health-care systems in remote antiquity were some form of energy-based medicine. Some of these have been in continuous use since. Considered alternative medicine, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Tibetan Medicine and others are all energy-based medicine, though complete entities and not just modalities within alternative medicine. There are perhaps hundreds or even thousands of modalities, therapies, treatments and support systems that fall in the energy-based medicine category and far more in alternative medicine.

Energy-Based Medicine Is a Category in Alternative Medicine. What Does it Do?

Today energy-based medicine is composed of holistic medical entities, modalities and therapies classified within a category with the same name, within alternative medicine. All of the modalities in energy-based medicine are considered to be of little or no use to allopathic medicine.

To date, most of the modalities in energy-based medicine include the spiritual aspect of human existence. Even today we express this energy in different ways, that we pick up "vibs" from another person, and indeed all of us at one time or another have had experiences with these energy fields in some way or another. Do these things really exist or are they figments of imagination? Do we have a sixth sense through which we can experience clairvoyance, ESP and other esoteric energies? To the unbelieving or insensitive person, alternative medicine, not to mention, energy-based medicine, is pure bunk.

In energy-based medicine, and almost all the rest of alternative medicine, therapy and treatment is incomplete without the consideration of not only the physical being, but the spiritual, emotional, and in some cases, social. Almost all cultures have also been aware of the energetic aspect of human health and proposed a series of energy channels and centers in the body. Examples would be the chakras in Ayurveda and other South Asian medical entities. Body energy (vital life energy proper) travels down through the body from the head to the feet and hands. In South Asian medicine, life energy force is called "chi" or "qi." Yin/Yang, meridians and meridian points make up the intricate maze of channels in the body through which the energy travels. They are mainstream health-care systems serving the regions in which they exist, however, to Western medicine, they are alternative medicine.

The Healing Qualities of Life Force Energy

In most energy-based medicine, in fact, most modalities found in alternative medicine, it is believed that when these passages become blocked restricted, or energies traveling the wrong way, the individual becomes subjected to disease and illness. Practically all modalities found in alternative medicine seek the origin of a disease or ailment rather than treating symptoms bio-medically. Energy-based medicine stimulates life force energies and balancing them. The basic ways are through meditation, exercise, and depending on the region, acupuncture and similar therapies.

Alternative medicine embraces these modalities and derivatives. Whilst a few therapies are not concerned with prana or chi energy, they non-the-less, utilize the laying on of hands (or coming into close proximity with the patient) through the hands of the practitioner comes healing energies. Whilst some of these procedures are Asian, some are also Western though the concepts behind them have originated in Asian countries.

Is Energy-Based Medicine Efficacious?

Basically all energy-based medicine is considered alternative medicine in the eyes of the allopathy because the modalities within remain out of sorts with scientific experimentation for a number of reasons. The energy fields have not been proven to actually exist as no instrument has the sensitivity to detect them. Albeit their existence and efficacy have been relatively suggestive by the test of time. Scientific analysis minimizes the phenomenon as, for the most part, a product of the placebo effect.

There are, however, reports, claims and circumstances that prove with little doubt that these energies exist, they can affect health and healing hands from trained practitioners are therapeutic. For the most part, the modalities in energy medicines receive less respect today because they have been relegated to the ranks of alternative medicine, outside of the highly respected scientific arena.

Alternative Medicine - The Other Choice

Alternative medicine is a general term that describes several forms of treatment, cures and relief that are derived from sources other than traditional medicine. The therapies, medical approaches and philosophies that are encompassed in the term alternative medicine are too many to be satisfactorily discussed in just a week. There are some forms of alternative medicine which are more widely used and well known than others. These more popular forms of alternative medicine have been accepted by many people and is widely practiced.

Acupuncture

This form of alternative medicine is a sort of therapy which is practiced with the use of special needles. These specially designed needles are thin and long which make it easier to insert them into the human body. The filiform needles are inserted into specific points in the human body which are designated for pain relief or therapy. This form of alternative medicine therapy originated from China. The Chinese developed a system of meridians from which energy is supposed to flow. Tapping into these meridians with the use of the acupuncture needles will help to relieve several conditions and ailments that a person may be experiencing as well as help to relax and even reduce weight.

There are so many different studies concerning acupuncture since this is one of the more popular forms of alternative medicine but the results are basically inconclusive. There are some health organizations that do acknowledge the positive effect acupuncture but traditional medicine do not. Many traditional medical practitioners claim that while acupuncture may not be effective there is nothing to lose if the patient would really like to try it. The use of clean and sterile needles as well as the application of the said practice by responsible and well trained specialist is musts for this form of alternative medicine. Whether it has a placebo effect of real effect on people may depend entirely on how receptive the person may be to it.

Chiropractic

This form of alternative medicine involves the treatment of disorders and other conditions through the application of pressure on the musculoskeletal system. In basic terms, the body, through realignment of the bones and pressure on the muscles is supposed to recover its balance and be relieved or cured from some conditions and disorders. This alternative medicine form of therapy uses the manipulation of the individual's joints, spine and other soft tissues to encompass the general application of manual therapy. The manipulation and manual therapy is basically done by the chiropractor but he can also assign a series of exercises and related therapies which the patient can do on his own at home.

This alternative medicine therapy was founded in the late 1800's. This practice enjoys much popularity in large areas of North America and also some parts of Asia. Chiropractic medicine is found to be effective in treating back pain and other condition related to the joints and bones. This alternative medicine therapy is acknowledge by may traditional medicine doctors as treatment for back pain but generally it is still considered as therapy and not actually medicine or cure. There is some controversy regarding the safety of the practice since there are some bogus chiropractors who have "accidents"

Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a form relief or treatment which includes several forms of alternative medicine therapies and treatments. The concept of naturopathy is that the body can heal itself without the need of traditional medicine through the various forms of natural medicine. The use of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, reflexology, botanical medicine, homeopathy, nutrition and even the practice of good hygiene are said to be include din naturopathy. Many people believe in this ideal and strive to heal or treat themselves through the use of natural forms of alternative medicine.

Marijuana And Your Property Investment

Huge Drug Crops in Property Investment Rentals

It is the same in most western developed countries where police have urged landlords to be aware of illegal drug set-ups in their property investment rentals. Rental properties are being used en mass by individuals and syndicates to grow marijuana of high quality and in abundance, often harvesting crops every 12 weeks.

During a large drug bust in Australia in late 2010, police executed 74 search warrants across the state of Victoria, seizing more than 9000 cannabis plants. A large number of people were charged with drug-related offences as a result of the raids.

Although stating the obvious, police said that 58 of the 68 residences raided were rentals. When landlords were contacted, the police found most of them were unaware of the illegal activity going on at their property. Most homeowners were found to be naive and had advertised for tenants via newspaper adverts and in shop windows. Consequently, their property investment rental agreements were more often than not, a piece of paper, handwritten and of little legal stature, despite full legal documentation being readily available on the internet.

Rental investment property in these cases are leased for the expressed purpose of growing 'dope' and sometimes every room in the house has hydroponic growing equipment, including reflective sheeting on the walls, a full lighting set up, watering system and air conditioning and an exhaust system to diffuse the heavy smell of maturing buds.

'Crop sitters' can be paid thousands of dollars a week to tend the crops and tenants were known to offer months and months of rent in advance and would pay each rent amount due, on time, Unfortunately when the tenant leaves, home owners would often find a house with carpet missing, new walls, water damage and a tampered with electrical system.

In every property investment rental, landlords need to formalise rental agreements and ask why they were offered such a large sum of money in advance.

Operation Entity, as the Victorian drug operation was called, was responsible for 30 people facing the judge on various criminal and drug related charges, but take note that in one house south of the city, police found more than 400 dope plants, growing in 11 rooms in a two story home!

Is Your Property Investment Rental A Drug House?

After reading an article highlighting this property investment rental problem, it got me thinking. Firstly it got me thinking of one of the properties I purchased and also of the potential of buying more 'drug houses'. If you own a drug house, then that's another problem and I hope you get out of it inexpensively and quickly, but one of the first houses I added to my property investment portfolio was an ex-hydroponic dope house.

The owners were at their wits' end and decided to sell rather than spend the money required to fix the house. The house was a mess, inside and out, especially since the guard dog had eaten parts of the side fence and the main window frames right down to the glass. It must have been devastating for the owners to see what was their family home at one time, reduced to the state it was in, just before I bought it. For me, this was an opportunity to add value to my property investment portfolio.

Benefits of Buying A Dope House As A Property Investment

The immediate benefit of a property of this nature that's for sale, is the price.
The second is the motivation of the vendor, who is often at the end of their tether.
The third is that the alterations made by the dope growers can be easily rectified, such as with many renovations.
The fourth is, the houses often look far worse than they are.
Lastly, the social stigma of the property's sordid past can drive potential buyers away.

Dangers of Buying a Dope House As a Property Investment

Walls - sometimes additions have been made and can be constructed out of any material, including asbestos, so be sure to check the nature of the walls. Most often they can be removed easily, but there could be cases where that extra room is perfect to add value, so assess the benefit as well as the professionalism of the workmanship. If you are going to remove any wall, just check it's not load bearing.

Plumbing - have a qualified plumber check your pipes and the mains. Often water had been diverted to the crop rooms and the main had been modified to register a lower reading.

Electrics - have a qualified electrician do a thorough pre purchase check and quote on the work required to re wire the house back to normal. All professional hydroponic setups have adjusted the wiring, often with amateur and dangerous results.

Ceilings & Roof Cavity - as per wiring, check the upper ceiling space carefully. Ceilings will have holes drilled into them for extra water pipes and for heavy-duty hooks to carry the weight of the hydroponic lights, so expect some plastering work. This applies also to how the growers have attached any reflective sheeting to the walls.

Police - if they are not aware already, notify them that you have bought the house and what you intend to do with it over what time period. You don't want an unexpected visit from the drug squad in the future, especially not an armed one.

What I Found In My Property Investment Dope House

I think I may have got out of the worst of the problems associated with buying property investment dope houses, but each one really needs to be assessed on its merits, like any other purchase. You just need to be aware beforehand of the probability of certain problems associated with drug crops. Please note though, I am discussing marijuana growing and not drug laboratories. I have only one thing to say about houses that were meth labs and that's "Don't Go There!"

What I found were live wires in the roof cavity, power re configured at the meter box, water pipes through the ceiling and roof, the water main had been tampered with, ceilings full of holes and some walls that needed to be re-plastered. Unfortunately, I didn't find a stash of either dope or money hidden away in any roof or underground cavity. I looked! The thought of some whacked out 'doper' leaving behind $50k stashed under the floorboards was on my mind for the first 3 weeks of the reno!

Property Investment Buyers' Ethos

I remember a chap describing his theory on due diligence for his property investment portfolio and that was " There are plenty of ways to skin a cat" and although that saying may be a little outdated, the premise and meaning behind it remains.

The Definition of Alternative Medicine

Have you ever suffered from a horrible headache when you thought the best remedy might be for someone to bash you over the head, or to pull your hair out? Then you might have some experience with alternative medicine!

In all seriousness, alternative medicine is not about hurting yourself, but involves investigating other potential methods to treat an ailment besides synthetic drugs. A good purpose for alternative medicine is to avoid developing a dependence on drugs of any type, which can supersede any medicinal or curing effects they might have. Searching for different ways of dealing with your physical or emotional issues or conditions can end up being better for you in the long run.

A great deal of alternative medicine treatments come from ancient medicinal knowledge and insight. Many different types of remedies used by different cultures through the years, including the use of needles for pain relief, herbs for medicinal treatments, or even massage therapy, are considered a form of medicine by the respective users because they work to some degree. However, many alternative treatments are unknown to the general public, as they are not in conformity with the mass marketed treatments and pharmaceuticals.

The definition of alternative medicine

There is really no one ultimate definition of alternative medicine. There are so many various methods and treatments that have been and continue to be investigated and promoted that it is hard to firmly define it.

Some of these alternative names to alternative medicine include holistic medicine, natural medicine, integrated medicine, and complementary medicine. They are all variations of the same idea, which is natural and alternative medicine. The design of alternative medicine is to ensure that all parts of a person's life and being are well and strong.

The point of view of the alternative medicine collective

A standard of those who advocate alternative medicine is that health isn't only the absence of illness or disease. Alternative medicine works to ensure that one's purpose in life is sustained, because a person without a purpose is not able to achieve his fullest potential. There needs to be inspiration and motivation to allow life to be lived to its fullest.

It is thought that illness might not be the end of one's world. Infection is not the only cause of sickness. The mind has the power to change one's personality completely. Take the great warrior king Asoka, for example. He was so stirred by the death and devastation brought about by the Kalinga war that he became a Buddhist reformer. In this respect, illness has the capacity to bring about change, to make us better human beings. For that reason, alternative medicine strives to consider not only the physical health of a person, but also his personality and emotions in treating ailments and bringing about total well-being.

Sometimes, when you aren't feeling that great, it might be better to relax by listening to calming music, taking a walk, or just thinking about life, rather than taking a pill to treat something momentarily. Discovering your purpose will give you a feeling of strength and the realization that life is worth living!

Grow-Ops!

Here is another very good reason to quit smoking: home-based marijuana growing operations not only reduce the market value of the properties they are carried out into - they also inhibit market values of neighboring properties as well! This is so, because most grow-ops are controlled and run for the benefit of organized crime, and these types of activities attract a lot of thugs who tend to fill the neighborhood at odd hours, so that the charm of home-sweet-home all of a sudden changes drastically for the worse. The Organized Crime Agency of British Columbia says that organized crime controls 85 percent of the marijuana cultivation and distribution in B.C. You might as well as live next to Sing-Sing.

In addition to spectacular natural scenery, super natural places to discover and two bustling metropolitan centers like Vancouver and Victoria, as well as boasting one of the mildest climates in Canada, British Columbia holds one other record - although this one is very seldom publicized on tourism websites: it is home to the 'B.C. Bud', one of the most sought-after varieties of marijuana.

Marijuana cultivation accounts for up to five percent of Canada's GDP in British Columbia alone, which means that the crop is worth more than the local mining and logging industries combined. In 2004, there were an estimated 17,500 grow labs in British Columbia, producing pot worth up to CAD $7 billion. The number of grow-ops busted by Police in British Columbia more than doubled between 1999 and 2004, from 1,251 to 2,908.

To think that legalization or decriminalization would change anything is absolutely ludicrous, in Canada at least, since what is produced in Canada is destined for the United States. A pound of marijuana in British Columbia is worth about CAD $2,500 locally. That same pound of marijuana in Seattle can fetch up to CAD $7,500. Organized crime recognizes that. Because of this, the problem is getting bigger, not smaller, and it is impacting more and more the local residential real estate industry.

At the level of the individual property owner, grow-ops cause in many cases irreversible structural damage. As these properties are invariably rented by growers for several months and then abandoned, in many instances the homes have holes in the walls for vents to get rid of much of the moisture, concrete foundations are damaged to accommodate rewiring that may be required to steal electricity to run the operation, and the artificial high humidity level and heat generated by the 1000-watt lamps employed in the operation, as well as the chemicals used to grow marijuana faster, cause toxic mould and structural damage to the inner components of the walls (so called 'black mould'). Besides, indoor grow-ops also pose a serious fire hazard, because marijuana cultivation requires much more electricity than a typical residential home. Illegal electrical hookups pose a serious safety risk for those in and near the home.

Human health risks can result from the mould sometimes associated with marijuana hydroponic cultivation, the chemicals used to foster plant growth, and the relatively high concentration of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide suspected to exist in some grow-op dwellings. Many of these safety concerns are exacerbated by the fact that grow ops are generally located in high-density areas.

In addition, property owners must contend with the stigma - the consequence of an unusual, distressing event or circumstance such as a criminal activity - that attaches to properties formerly used for pot farming. This is especially evident when time comes to sell, as stigmatized properties are worth less because Buyers are reluctant to consider them. Prior to entering into a Contract to sell real estate the Seller is required to disclose to the Buyer any latent defects the Seller is aware of. Failure to disclose will not affect the consent of the parties, but will have similar consequences as misrepresentation. Likewise, Buyers who fail to disclose to a lender that the property they are about to purchase (with the lender's money) has been used for marijuana growing commit a criminal offence under Section 380 of PART X (FRAUDULENT TRANSACTIONS RELATING TO CONTRACTS AND TRADE) of the British Columbia Criminal Code.

And finally, with the increasing number of new homes and condominiums being used for marijuana farming, the companies who offer home warranties in British Columbia have begun suspending coverage on homes identified as grow-ops. Since 1999, all residential builders in B.C. must arrange for home warranty insurance before they can obtain a building permit. The legislated home warranty insurance covers two years on labor and materials, five years on the building envelope and ten years on the structure. But homes that have been used for purposes "other than residential" can have exclusions to their warranty. Since the houses are invariably damaged by the moisture, mould, bad wiring or other alterations made for a grow operation, companies that provide the warranties are sending inspectors to the homes, and then suspend coverage in whole or in part.

Alternative Medicine - Its Strengths and Weaknesses

If allopathic medicine (the scientific, evidence-based medical body prevalent in Western nations and in Europe) recognized the theories, cultural, philosophical and ideals of many of the medical systems, therapies and procedures found in alternative medicine, we would indeed, have a truly complete and nearly-infallable health-care system.

Briefly, What Is Alternative Medicine and Allopathic Medicine?

The term alternative medicine refers to any medical modality or system that has not been proven by science or if it has, proven positive for ineffectiveness, unreliable and/or harmful. Those modalities which are generally in use in allopathic medicine but not inducted into the system are known as complimentary medicine. Due to the nature of most of these, we will include them with alternative medicine in our little study here.

"Alternative medicine" is a term coined in retrospect to allopathic medicine referring to many systems which have been in use for centuries, and in some cases, since prehistoric times. The term is of fairly recent origin and, of course, includes modalities which have come into existence in comparatively recent times. We will now delve into our study here.

Alternative Medicine in Theory and How This Compares to Allopathic Medicine

Most of the modalities in alternative medicine share a common trait - they tend to be holistic - in other words, in treatment and therapies, they are concerned with the whole being. This is one of the greatest strengths of these health care systems and therapies. In treatment practitioners tend to spend much longer in consultation with the patient discussing his lifestyle and how the ailment may have originated. This process takes in the physical, spiritual and emotional aspects in the life of the patient. Treatment tends to be personal, suited to the needs of the patient and pin points the causes of the ailment. The practitioner addresses the underlying problem after a thorough analysis of these things.

This is not so in allopathic medicine. Treatment begins with consideration of the symptoms the patient is having and in many cases, emphasis is placed on treating these rather than digging down to the cause. In essence, this is exactly what "allopathic" means. Coined by Samuel Hahnemann, the father of homeopathic medicine, he noted the tendency of modern medicine to treat symptoms rather than the disease, hence "allo," from the Greek, allos - "other" + "pathy" (or pathos in Greek,) meaning "suffering." In allopathic medicine, treatment tends to be standardized, brief, and impersonal. Treatment is also highly specialized in that it narrows down to specific symptoms and has a maze of departments, each of which concerns itself with a specific region of the physical body.

Albeit the strength of allopathic medicine is the weakness of most modalities in alternative medicine. Allopathic medicine is backed by scientific research and is the backbone of everything done within, from the initial consultation to discharge from services. Alternative medicine has never adhered so adamantly to scientific methodology and is therefore highly variant from modality to modality and even within each of these. Healing in far more cases comes about through the placebo effect in many of the modalities and as a result, though a fair amount of therapies through alternative medicine are effective and efficacious, some processes are faulty and downright harmful.

Okay, What's the Punch-Line Here - Alternative Medicine or Allopathic Medicine?

Both are highly valuable in health-care. Albeit due to rigorous scientific support and the incredible degree of technology found in allopathic medicine, this should always be the first in the line of consultation, especially in all medical emergencies and issues where lives are in serious danger due to accidents, disease or any other physical malady.

Many of the modalities in alternative medicine stress good health and lifestyles that would promote this. Allopathic medicine tends to leave this detail out and health education comes down to each individual in the societies which this medical system is found. Often a modality in alternative health embrace philosophies and cultures that reflect their societies as a rule which includes holistic health and wholesome living.

In many cases continued and long-term therapy in allopathic medicine can be complimented and, in some cases, replaced altogether with a treatment or therapy in alternative medicine. Pain management through hypnotherapy rather than chemical-based therapy is a prime example and in certain circumstances this will be cleared by your regular physician.

10 Facts to Know About the Los Angeles Medicinal Marijuana Program

The Los Angeles Medicinal Marijuana Program is one that has greatly expanded over the past five years. As more and more doctors become part of this growing network, and as more and more research institutes are able to produce clinical studies on the benefits of medicinal marijuana, more and more ailments are being approved for it to effectively treat.
Tantamount to these efforts is progress. A good idea of this progress can be realized when one analyzes how many different conditions medical cannabis is approved to treat in Los Angeles, a number that currently is more than 150. If you ever wondered about what some quick facts were regarding the Los Angeles Medicinal Marijuana Program, these 10 should keep you well informed about it.
Top 10 Factoids About the Los Angeles Medicinal Marijuana Program
1. Proposition 215 legalizing a Los Angeles medicinal marijuana program was originally passed in 1996, called the Compassionate Use Act of 1996.
2. In 2003, this proposition was amended as Senate Bill (SB) 420 (Chapter 875, Statutes of 2003), which created dispensaries and a marijuana card program in LA.
3. The Los Angeles Medicinal Marijuana Program is administered, tracked and funded by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH)
4. Senate Bill 420 requires that this medical marijuana program be paid for by the application fees charged for each card by the state.
5. Per the CDPH guidelines, "Upon obtaining a recommendation from their physician for use of medicinal marijuana, patients and their primary caregivers may apply for and be issued, a Medical Marijuana Identification Card."
6. Per CDPH specs for the fiscal year of 2011, there are more than 52,549 Los Angeles medical marijuana cards in use that are valid for one year.
7. Only licensed doctors or LA marijuana clinics and medical offices can recommend patients for an Los Angeles cannabis card.
8. Per state of California law, "seriously ill Californians have the right to obtain and use marijuana for medical purposes" and to "ensure that patients and their primary caregivers who obtain and use marijuana for medical purposes upon the recommendation of a physician are not subject to criminal prosecution or sanction." (Calif. Health & Safety Code 11362.5 (b)) Patients and/or their primary caregivers may possess no more than eight ounces of dried marijuana and/or six mature (or 12 immature) marijuana plants."
9. Minors who are suffering from covered illnesses can be approved for a medical marijuana card in Los Angeles, but they must meet specific requirements that are set by the state, which can vary by county.
10. Only holders of a valid card are protected from legal prosecution by the state. Federal law still prohibits using marijuana for any reason and classifies it as a schedule 1 drug. However, it's highly unlikely that any person would be prosecuted for using medical marijuana in LA by the feds, as they don't police residents of states in the union.

Medical Marijuana For ADHD

At the Peace in Medicine Healing Center in Sebastopol, the wares on display include dried marijuana - featuring brands like Kryptonite, Voodoo Daddy and Train Wreck - and medicinal cookies arrayed below a sign saying, "Keep Out of Reach of Your Mother."
Several Bay Area doctors who recommend medical marijuana for their patients said in recent interviews that their client base had expanded to include teenagers with psychiatric conditions including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
"It's not everybody's medicine, but for some, it can make a profound difference," said Valerie Corral, a founder of the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana, a patients' collective in Santa Cruz that has two dozen minors as registered clients.
Because California does not require doctors to report cases involving medical marijuana, no reliable data exist for how many minors have been authorized to receive it. But Dr. Jean Talleyrand, who founded MediCann, a network in Oakland of 20 clinics who authorize patients to use the drug, said his staff members had treated as many as 50 patients ages 14 to 18 who had A.D.H.D. Bay Area doctors have been at the forefront of the fierce debate about medical marijuana, winning tolerance for people with grave illnesses like terminal cancer and AIDS. Yet as these doctors use their discretion more liberally, such support - even here - may be harder to muster, especially when it comes to using marijuana to treat adolescents with A.D.H.D.
"How many ways can one say 'one of the worst ideas of all time?' " asked Stephen Hinshaw, the chairman of the psychology department at the University of California, Berkeley. He cited studies showing that tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, disrupts attention, memory and concentration - functions already compromised in people with the attention-deficit disorder.
Advocates are just as adamant, though they are in a distinct minority. "It's safer than aspirin," Dr. Talleyrand said. He and other marijuana advocates maintain that it is also safer than methylphenidate (Ritalin), the stimulant prescription drug most often used to treat A.D.H.D. That drug has documented potential side effects including insomnia, depression, facial tics and stunted growth.
In 1996, voters approved a ballot proposition making California the first state to legalize medical marijuana. Twelve other states have followed suit - allowing cannabis for several specified, serious conditions including cancer and AIDS - but only California adds the grab-bag phrase "for any other illness for which marijuana provides relief."
This has left those doctors willing to "recommend" cannabis - in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of medical marijuana, they cannot legally prescribe it - with leeway that some use to a daring degree. "You can get it for a backache," said Keith Stroup, the founder of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
Nonetheless, expanding its use among young people is controversial even among doctors who authorize medical marijuana.
Gene Schoenfeld, a doctor in Sausalito, said, "I wouldn't do it for anyone under 21, unless they have a life-threatening problem such as cancer or AIDS."
Dr. Schoenfeld added, "It's detrimental to adolescents who chronically use it, and if it's being used medically, that implies chronic use."
Dr. Nora D. Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said she was particularly worried about the risk of dependency - a risk she said was already high among adolescents and people with attention-deficit disorder.
Counterintuitive as it may seem, however, patients and doctors have been reporting that marijuana helps alleviate some of the symptoms, particularly the anxiety and anger that so often accompany A.D.H.D. The disorder has been diagnosed in more than 4.5 million children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Researchers have linked the use of marijuana by adolescents to increased risk of psychosis and schizophrenia for people genetically predisposed to those illnesses. However, one 2008 report in the journal Schizophrenia Research suggested that the incidence of mental health problems among adolescents with the disorder who used marijuana was lower than that of nonusers.
Marijuana is "a godsend" for some people with A.D.H.D., said Dr. Edward M. Hallowell, a psychiatrist who has written several books on the disorder. However, Dr. Hallowell said he discourages his patients from using it, both because it is - mostly - illegal, and because his observations show that "it can lead to a syndrome in which all the person wants to do all day is get stoned, and they do nothing else."
Until the age of 18, patients requesting medical marijuana must be accompanied to the doctor's appointment and to the dispensaries by a parent or authorized caregiver. Some doctors interviewed said they suspected that in at least some cases, parents were accompanying their children primarily with the hope that medical authorization would allow the adolescents to avoid buying drugs on the street.
A recent University of Michigan study found that more than 40 percent of high school students had tried marijuana.
"I don't have a problem with that, as long as we can have our medical conversation," Dr. Talleyrand said, adding that patients must have medical records to be seen by his doctors.
The Medical Board of California began investigating Dr. Talleyrand in the spring, said a board spokeswoman, Candis Cohen, after a KGO-TV report detailed questionable practices at MediCann clinics, which, the report said, had grossed at least $10 million in five years.
Dr. Talleyrand and his staff members are not alone in being willing to recommend marijuana for minors. In Berkeley, Dr. Frank Lucido said he was questioned by the medical board but ultimately not disciplined after he authorized marijuana for a 16-year-old boy with A.D.H.D. who had tried Ritalin unsuccessfully and was racking up a record of minor arrests.
Within a year of the new treatment, he said, the boy was getting better grades and was even elected president of his special-education class. "He was telling his mother: 'My brain works. I can think,' " Dr. Lucido said.
"With any medication, you weigh the benefits against the risks," he added.
Even so, MediCann patients who receive the authorization must sign a form listing possible downsides of marijuana use, including "mental slowness," memory problems, nervousness, confusion, "increased talkativeness," rapid heartbeat, difficulty in completing complex tasks and hunger. "Some patients can become dependent on marijuana," the form also warns.
The White House's recent signals of more federal tolerance for state medical marijuana laws - which pointedly excluded sales to minors - reignited the debate over medical marijuana.
Some advocates, like Dr. Lester Grinspoon, an associate professor emeritus of psychiatry at Harvard University, suggest that medical marijuana's stigma has less to do with questions of clinical efficacy and more to do with its association, in popular culture, with illicit pleasure and addiction.
Others, like Alberto Torrico of Fremont, the majority leader of the California Assembly, argue for more oversight in general. "The marijuana is a lot more powerful these days than when we were growing up, and too much is being dispensed for nonmedical reasons," he said in an interview last week, bluntly adding, "Any children being given medical marijuana is unacceptable."
As advocates of increased acceptance try to win support, they may find their serious arguments compromised by the dispensaries' playful atmosphere.
OrganiCann, a dispensary in Santa Rosa, has a Web site advertisement listing the "medible of the week" - butterscotch rock candy - invitingly photographed in a gift box with a ribbon. OrganiCann also offers a 10 percent discount, every Friday, for customers with a valid student ID.

Getting Scroggy

Know the Benefits of Cannabis

What do the current medical laws sweeping the country mean? How do they work? Contrary to the opinion of many, not just anyone can get medicinal cannabis.
According to these new state laws, you must have at least one illness on a specific list of conditions and this must be diagnosed by a real doctor who recommends cannabis as an appropriate medication.
The doctor provides the patients with a written recommendation that it will alleviate the symptoms of their condition. Patients then have several options open to them depending on which state's laws they live under.
The first option in many states is to simply take the letter of recommendation from your doctor to a medical marijuana dispensary. They will most likely keep a copy of your letter on file and then you can purchase your prescription pot from this dispensary from that point on. If you need to move or buy them from another location, you need only have the doctor's note with you.
The next option is for you to take the letter from your doctor and send it in with certain health department forms to your state government. Your state's health department will then send you a medical card. This card can then be used at various dispensaries within your state. This option is required in some states and not in others, but either way you must have a condition for which your doctor can write a letter of recommendation to ingest cannabis.
Most states also provide a third option for patients. You can acquire your doctor's letter of recommendation and then send it in to the state's health department with the necessary forms. This third option, however, requires you to request a medical card in order for you to grow your own medicinal cannabis. The laws in this area not only vary by state, but also by county in some cases.
A qualified patient can be in possession of anywhere from eight ounces of them to several pounds and they can grow and maintain from six to fifty plants of varying maturity depending on which county of the state they live in.
It may seem like the new laws allowing prescription cannabis for certain patients are legalizing pot, but this is not the case. The new laws such as proposition 215 in California are being instituted to allow people who suffer from certain illness to access the medicine they need to feel better.

The Marijuana Effect on Diseases

In ancient days marijuana was treated as natural drug that was used by those people who felt ignored by the world. But in late 70's the scientists led a research and found positive healing effects of marijuana thus making it clear that marijuana should not be ignored as a substance. It was then declared as a medicinal drug and was called as medical marijuana. Some countries have made growing, buying, selling, possessing and using marijuana absolutely legal. The residents who are patients to a specific disease are cured by these but they should have Medical Marijuana License for all these works to do. In US marijuana deployment is prohibited as it is treated as a drug there, but in approx 14 states there it's been made legal due to the benefits which their citizens received in marijuana treatment. Marijuana can also be injurious if it's taken in excess so it's been made clear that as per rules you can only possess an adequate amount of the cannabis (marijuana).
Marijuana actually contains 483 different chemical constituents. In detailed study it was found that it also contains non-psychoactive components. These constituents are helpful in treatment of diseases such as cancer and aids. There are several Medical Marijuana Dispensaries also available which help people in the treatment from different terminal diseases. A good marijuana dispensary offers you an appointment with the physician certified for their work in medical marijuana treatment. Then the patent have to visit the local health department to obtain the MMJ Card. Marijuana treatment is very efficient and it confirms to give treatment for several diseases. You must visit to several dispensaries before getting the treatment. Doing so will make you understand their method of treatment and the atmosphere which is provided there.
Each marijuana patient should have a medical marijuana card if they want to be taken through marijuana treatment. The MMJ cards are provided by the state authorities where it's been registered as a legal substance. It's important that you get your medical marijuana card from a good card enrollment company because there are other companies that too provide the promised services but they send the cards via post which are sometimes not valid. While getting your marijuana treatment card you must ensure that the company who's delivering your card possesses Medical Marijuana License. You have to follow some basic and simple guidelines in order to get this card. This needs ID card and driving license in order to make it clear that you are a resident of the country. It will surely take a lot of time and some additional efforts to become eligible and verifying of documents but by this procedure you will be insured that there won't be any problem later. We are hoping that someday the whole world will understand the benefits of cannabis and it will be made legal in all the states so that the patients can avail the benefits of medical marijuana treatment right at their home.

California Cannabis Law

MMP or the Medical Marijuana Program was established in order to provide a voluntary medical marijuana ID card issuance program for all those patients who qualified and their caregivers as well. In the state of California, the system allows enforcement of laws and verifies validity of qualified patients and their caregivers to possess, grow, use and transport medical marijuana in the state. Medical marijuana use was approved in California on November 5, 1996 via a 56 percent vote. Upon getting a recommendation from a physician for medical marijuana use, a patient and his or her primary caregiver could apply and be issued a medical marijuana card. Senate bill 420 further required that the program be supported fully via the card application processing fees. Both counties and state have the authority to cover the costs they incur through the application fees.

Some of the medical conditions approved for therapeutic marijuana use in California include anorexia, AIDS, arthritis, Cachexia, chronic pain, glaucoma, cancer, migraine, seizures, severe nausea, persistent muscle spasms including those associated with multiple sclerosis, migraine and other persistent or chronic medical symptoms. To register for the MMP card in California, you have to contact your county program and complete an application form. You should also ask your doctor to complete a written documentation of your records and then mail the forms to the California Department of Public Health, with attention to the Medical Marijuana Program Unit. The card fee is $66 for every patient and $33 for every caregiver. These figures are only state administration fees and counties could add administration fees of their own, so make sure to contact your county before you proceed in applying for an MMP card.

The legalization of marijuana use has removed criminal penalties on possession, use and cultivation of marijuana by those who acquired a doctor's written recommendation which states that the person benefits from using medical marijuana. Patients who were diagnosed with debilitating illness where marijuana has been deemed appropriate are given legal protection under the law. The amount that a patient can possess is not more than eight ounces of dried marijuana or six mature plants. Twelve immature marijuana may be allowed as a replacement of the six mature ones. The legislation also allows municipalities and councils to maintain or approve local ordinances that permit patients to possess bigger quantities than normally allowed under the new guidelines of the state of California.
